Can a Face Oil Replace Serums and Creams?

Can face oils replace serums and eye creams?

Introduction.

As an esthetician, I am often asked if a face oil can replace serums and creams. Depending on the contents of the face oil, the answer is yes. When formulated correctly, a face oil can support barrier health, deliver active compounds, and simplify your routine without sacrificing results.

What is a face oil?

To begin with, what is a face oil? A face oil is a skincare product that blends natural carrier oils (for more information about carrier oils, see this blog post on seed oils for skin), such as safflower, apricot kernel, or castor oil.

Sometimes, essential oils are added to the blend (for more details about essential oils, see this blog post on essential oils for skin), or herbs and spices are infused for additional skin benefits. Face oils are used as a finishing product after cleansing to nourish the skin, support the skin barrier, and help maintain hydration. Many also contain beneficial fatty acids, which play a key role in keeping skin smooth, resilient, and balanced (explained further in our post on understanding fatty acids and your skin barrier).

Understand how face oils work. Holy Grail Face Oil can replace serums and moisturizers.

What is a cream?

A cream is a water-based product that provides hydration and protection when applied after cleansing your skin. It contains a variety of ingredients, such as humectants (water-attracting molecules), emollients (usually oil-based ingredients that fill in gaps between skin cells), and occlusives (ingredients that sit on the skin's surface and trap moisture).

Since skincare products made with water are prone to bacterial growth, creams generally require preservatives to maintain stability and shelf life. While many creams are effective for hydration, they typically focus on surface-level moisturization rather than delivering concentrated lipid nourishment that supports long-term barrier function.

What is a serum?

A serum is a water-based product that contains a high concentration of active ingredients that target specific skin concerns, such as fine lines, pigmentation, or acne. They are typically used before creams because they do not provide enough protection on their own.

Some serums rely on exfoliating or stimulating actives that can disrupt the barrier when overused. In contrast, plant-based oils rich in antioxidants and lipids (such as those discussed in our post on saffron for skin and meadowfoam oil for barrier repair) can support skin function while remaining gentle and balancing.

Differences in molecular weight.

Creams typically have a larger molecular weight, which causes them to sit primarily on the surface of your skin. This enables them to lock in moisture and provide barrier support.

Serums generally contain smaller molecular-weight compounds, allowing them to absorb quickly and reach deeper layers of the skin.

Face oils vary depending on their composition. Oils made primarily from carrier oils function similarly to creams, helping reduce transepidermal water loss. However, when formulated with smaller, bioactive compounds, they can also support deeper skin function while strengthening the surface barrier.

Molecular weight of ingredients matters.

Face oils, creams, and serums are made from ingredients with varying molecular weights, which influences how they interact with your skin. Molecular weight is measured in Daltons, a unit equal to one-twelfth the mass of a carbon atom. Generally:

• Under 500 Daltons: penetrate more easily
• 500 to 1,000 Daltons: moderate penetration
• Over 1,000 Daltons: primarily remain on the surface

That said, penetration is not the only factor that matters. Barrier compatibility, lipid composition, and formulation stability are just as important in determining how effective a product will be for long-term skin health.

Conclusion.

Face oils made from a thoughtful blend of carrier oils and bioactive compounds can offer the protective qualities of a cream while supporting deeper skin function similar to a serum. For many people, this makes them an effective all-in-one option that simplifies a routine without compromising results.

If you're interested in trying a face oil that combines both carrier and essential oils, consider our Holy Grail Face Oil. I designed the formula to work in harmony with the skin barrier while delivering nutrients that support healthier-looking skin over time with fewer steps.
