Signs Of Skin Stripping & What To Do About It

Introduction

In the quest for radiant and healthy skin, people often experiment with various skincare routines and products. However, it's crucial to be aware of the signs and causes of a common skin issue that may arise- skin stripping. Skin stripping occurs when the skin's natural barrier is compromised, leading to irritation, dryness, and discomfort. This is something I encounter all too often amongst my facial clients. In this post, I will delve into the signs of skin stripping, its common causes, and explore remedies to restore and maintain a healthy complexion.

Signs of Skin Stripping.

Identifying skin stripping is essential for timely intervention; the longer your skin remain in this stressed state, the more difficult it can be to repair. Some common signs include:

  1. Dryness and Tightness: Skin stripping often manifests as an immediate sensation of dryness and tightness. If your skin feels parched and lacks its usual suppleness, it might be a sign of a compromised barrier.
  2. Redness and Irritation: An irritated complexion with visible redness is another indication of skin stripping. This can be accompanied by a burning or stinging sensation, especially when applying skincare products.
  3. Flakiness and Peeling: When the skin's protective layer is stripped away, it becomes prone to flakiness and peeling. You may notice small, dry flakes on the surface, signaling a need for attention.
  4. Increased Sensitivity: Skin stripping can heighten skin sensitivity, making it more reactive to environmental factors and skincare ingredients. If your skin reacts strongly to products that were once well-tolerated, it could be a result of a compromised barrier.

Causes of Skin Stripping.

Understanding the root causes of skin stripping is crucial for preventing its occurrence. Some of the most common factors include:

  1. Harsh Cleansers: Aggressive cleansers, particularly those containing sulfates and other harsh chemicals, can strip away the skin's natural oils and disrupt the protective barrier.
  2. Over-Exfoliation: Exfoliating is beneficial for removing dead skin cells, but excessive exfoliation can lead to skin stripping. Overdoing it can compromise the skin's barrier function, causing dryness and irritation.
  3. Weather Conditions: Extreme weather conditions, especially cold and dry environments, can contribute to skin stripping. Exposure to harsh winds and low humidity can sap the skin of its moisture.
  4. Incorrect Product Use: Misuse of skincare products, such as using too much or combining incompatible ingredients, can compromise the skin's barrier and lead to adverse reactions.

Remedies for Skin Stripping.

When faced with skin stripping, there are a few things I suggest you do:

  1. Analyze Your Environment: Consider environmental factors, such as weather conditions, that may contribute to skin stripping. In extremely cold weather, it can be helpful to bundle up with a scarf to prevent icy winds from whipping your skin. In harsh winds and low humidity, it is crucial to moisturize your skin. Even dry indoor air caused by heaters can sap moisture from your skin; a humidifier is a great remedy for this!
  2. Minimize Your Skincare Routine: When you use a ton of products, it can be difficult to figure out if one in particular is causing skin stripping or irritation. I always recommend paring down your routine to the absolute minimum, seeing how your skin reacts, then gradually re-introducing products one at a time to pinpoint the potential irritants. Of course, you could always stick with the more simple routine; many of my clients find that this helps keep their skin clearer and healthier in the long run!
  3. Treat Your Skin More Gently: It’s always good practice to treat your skin gentle, not only when you are experiencing skin stripping. Be mindful of over-exfoliation; I recommend no more than once per week. When you are constantly exfoliating your skin, you are breaking down your skin before it is able to fully repair itself- this will leave it chronically stressed and susceptible to redness, dryness, and irritation. It’s also good practice to dry your skin gently after washing it- no harsh rubbing
  4. Use Natural Skincare Products: It’s no secret that I’m a huge fan of natural skincare products. I truly believe that using products made from simple all-natural ingredients allows your skin to function at its best, which in turn, keeps it healthy and looking its best. Always look at the labels, and if you can, make sure you choose all-natural products. Skincare products that contain synthetic ingredients or water-based formulas require preservatives to give them a stable shelf life; these preservatives serve no purpose for skincare and can often irritate your skin. This is why I formulated our Holy Grail Face Oil and Fountain Of Youth Cleansing Clay to contain only all-natural, active ingredients that are proven skin-safe and effective. These two multi-step products take the place of a cleanser, exfoliant, toner, serum, moisturizer, and eye cream, and each contains only 10 ingredients. Using them is like a breath of fresh air for your skin and you never have to worry about skin stripping!

Conclusion

In conclusion, recognizing the signs and addressing the causes of skin stripping is crucial for maintaining a healthy complexion. Embracing a simplified and natural skincare routine can contribute to the restoration of your skin’s natural barrier and give you healthy, glowing, radiant skin!
